"However, the disclosure didn’t mention that the UV Foundation is an offshoot of the Indoor Tanning Association and that all of its board members also serve as fiduciaries of the parent trade association, which represents the artificial tanning industry. The foundation acknowledges that it has given Holick more than $150,000 in research support over three years."
"Holick said his total research budget is about $3 million a year, which comes from NIH grants, grants from the Dairy Council, and private donations." My initial response to this was a bit skewed and reactionary, I'll admit. (Here: MP in the news)
I'm grateful for Joyce's redirect to remind us that much of the industry's focus on the benefits of vitamin D are simply uninformed about the alternative view.
With that said, I am still always amazed at the degree of "conflict of interest" or perhaps "confluence"(?)... that occurs in the world of research. I suppose it only makes sense that the people who have the most to gain financially are going to fund research that directly supports something they want to sell, but I also find it appalling that "well-known" researchers simply aren't able to function independent of the corporate marketing machine that pays for it all.
Isn't the whole idea of "scientific" research and science in general to be unbiased and open to wherever the science leads?
And yes, with Joyce's reminder, I also realize that even if it were independent research, there are many who would still be focusing on the "vitamin D can do no wrong" path simply because that is where it's leading them right now.
But, also there are those who will be exposed to the alternative viewpoint and ignore it, simply because it conflicts with the current view that is behind marketing health products/supplements.

Here are some powerful animated video's on that concept.
20 yrs ago i used to believe that drs had all the latest research at there fingertips via the internet.
lyme disease was going to make me get arthitis.
i had allergies.
i got strep throat every year like clockwork about the end of jan.
or pneumonia
to be a success you had to give 110%
then i met a friend with psoriasis and she tried a triple blind study of enbrel
so i started studying autoimmunity theory for psoriasis & psoriatic arthritis.
then i got really sick and had to surrender my jobs, family, and home.
i see now why the economy is so sick.

Ron, those are great videos... How do I get the urls so I can post them on Facebook if that is possible?
I am skeptical about what comes out of the field of science because of the number of scientists who have made claims that such and such is not true simply because they have no evidence for something (or in some cases because evidence is simply not possible or the collecting of it is currently inconceivable) and because of how long it takes for the scientific herd to consider that something they think might be true might not be true. Scientists are human too. Were most like the author of that video and if I didn't know about how often research is driven by self interest (to name just one criticism of the field as it operates not as idealists would like it to operate), I'd feel a lot better about scientists in general. At the same time, I am open to hearing scientific claims.
As someone who has experienced numerous mystical experiences (experiences where I can provide no evidence to anyone else let alone myself save for the experience), I often say, "I believe thus and such to be true based on my experience, but I also recognize that it may not be." That is, I remain open to the idea that there are alternate explanations to my experience that could convince me that they have a different meaning. Indeed some experiences have left me laughing with the variety of explanations I can come up with for their existence (even if there could be some metaphysical/mystical reality at their root and even if my various experiences lead me to believe in a metaphysical/mystical reality). Reality itself is an interesting concept worth exploring, eh?
Again, great videos worth sharing!!!
Marysue, like you, I am appalled by how often money interests direct scientific work. I don't think Ron's videos address your concern. However, I do think the videos on YouTube having to do with that new film about Lyme speaks a bit about how patent policies harm those who might benefit from research. How poorly thought out policies can shut down the sharing of knowledge and scientific progress. (That is, no doubt the money interests who lobbied for those policies spent a long time thinking about them and how to present them as a public good.)

majic & mystery i have banged the last nail on that coffin.
I couldn't save any body. not at Oklahoma city or the pentagon or NYC the USS Cole
not even close friends.
My old boss, my family and friends have witnessed and can testify in a court of law to the precognitions i have experienced and shared.

The second video seems to completely "blow" the first video's hypothesis away.
Science is wonderful, for sure, but only when it is in the hands of honest scientists....not those that have an axe to grind or are being funded by special interests.

Difficult enough at times to feel our way through the fog, doubtless I contribute to confuse the issues through chronic incurable lateral thinking, one day I may be able to harness that eccentricity ??
Today we took our kids to the dinosaur museum in Brussels (highly recommended btw!). And look what it said at the Tyrannosaurus Rex.
Gout is caused by eating too much red meat, so it proven that T.rexes were carnivores! Guess they visited McDonalds too often, just like the mummies in ancient Egypt did...
All the mummies were of high socio-economic status and would have had a rich diet.
Even without fortified foods adding to the consumption of excess vitamin D, it is interesting that "rich diets" also seem to include higher amounts of exogenous D. So maybe they were also affected by the consumption of D in their rich diet.

I thought gout was caused by too much wine
Now you tell me ! Have I given up wine for no reason?
Perhaps gout is caused by eating too many vegetables, which would indicate T. Rex to be vegetarian, also rich Egyptians. All those very old vegetables would start to ferment, thereby making alcohol.
Apparently, I missed the opportunity to lose my obesity status when I started lowering my levels of D. Oh wait, that's right, I gained 80 pounds while having a high level of vitamin D. Oh...this is so confusing... Seems I was hallucinating in 2004 after sun exposure and arm and leg muscles gave out.
I read an article recently that said that being overweight was linked (perhaps one of the causes) for Fibro. Huh! Not that it couldn't be another symptom.
