Dear Friends:

My “trachoma-like conjunctivitis” (see urgent problems forum) is much improved but a spot still lingers under the left eye lid. Sometimes it seems almost gone, and then it will flare up.  I can’t tell if this is due to the impact of phase 2 antibiotics, sun/light exposure or my sporadic use of antibiotic eye drops.  Trevor advised that antibiotic drops were OK, and I have used them on average once a day.

As outlined in the FAQ forum, a strategy for reducing herx is to increase the frequency of mino dosing so the antibiotic concentration in the body never gets too low.  Lonestartick recently reported that inadvertently taking diflucan on several occasions stopped her herxing and subsequently avoiding this med coincided with the eventual resolution of what was believed to be a Candida infection.

Could it be that this eye problem will not completely resolve as long as I keep playing with the antibiotic drops?  Or am I just controlling the herx to a tolerable level when I use them “as needed”?  Am I teasing this Chlamydia in and out of an L form?  I want to get rid of this symptom, but I sure DON’T want to look in my magnifying mirror again and see eyelashes turned down onto my eyeball.

I realize that there are no “for sure” answers here, but any MP-consistent advice would be appreciated.

Carol

Hello Carol

I am on the road back protocol I'm just about to switchover to the MP. Since I got back from the conference I have been staying out of the sun and wearing my sunglasses. My eyes have been getting really close to what you're describing. They are matted a lot of times and my eyelashes are trying to turn down . Not as bad butt something is going on. I have a feeling win I get on full protocol I'm going to be asking the same questions. What eyedrops have you been using just in case.

Sincerely Ival

Dear Ival:

Wow!  This is fascinating.  Another RA person experiencing this same "highly unusual" (as the opthamologist kept saying to me) symptom.

I well remember meeting you in Chicago and our brief discussion about flagyl.  It is the only other antibiotic that I ever took that caused me to herx.  Now that I'm on the MP I'm herxing big time.

Please see the discussion about my "Disturbing Eye Problem " under the urgent problems forum.  I was pretty worried when this popped up and I got help immediately from Trevor, Barb and Belinda.

The eye drops are Zymar (gatifloxacin). Don't let this go until your eyelashes curl down and rub on your cornea!!!

I'm glad to hear you are going to start the MP.

Best wishes,
Carol

While on the topic of eye-related problems...

My wife has Sarcoidosis, my child has very high 1,25D value and I have a D-ratio of 2.0.

I've been having recurring eye "infections" for the last few years, on and off. This past Christmas (now approaching 4 months), I developed a stye called a chalazion.

It started in my right eye and now is also present in my left eye. It's basically a small lump on the top eye lid. I've tried two types of anitbiotic eye drops and have also been given oral antibiotic which belongs to the penicillin family. I'm not sure whether I should take the penicillin as I've read somewhere that it can cause the bacteria to convert to the CWD form. If so, I guess it's not the best thing, is it?

I've been putting lots of hot compresses on both eyes, which has caused the right lump to come to a head and the left one to stop growing, but they're still there - not a pretty sight. It's not causing any pain but being the eye, it's somewhat concerning. I've been told they can do some minor surgery but they are known to recur. If the MP can help, I'd rather avoid unnecessary surgery.

Should I have reason to believe that this is related to systemic inflammation as a result of CWD? My 1,25D value is just below the Merc maximum, but the D-ratio is 2.0.

Eurico

Eurico,

I would suspect Th1 inflammation first for your eye problem. And I would expect that the MP meds would resolve that inflammation. Keep in mind that the Herx reaction might make it worse temporarily. But then you would know that it is due to intracellular bacteria.

Good luck with your efforts to get the whole family on the MP and healthy.

Best,

Meg

Hello, Eurico, and others

In November last year, during my annual checkup by the ophthalmologist, I was diagnosed with blepharitis.  "With blepharitis, both the upper and lower eyelids become coated with oily particles near the base of the eyelashes...Large amounts of bacteria around the eyelashes can cause dandruff-like scales and particles to form along the lashes and the eyelid margins."  (all quotes from the American Academy of Ophthalmology website)

"Blepharitis also is associated with meibomitis--dysfunction and inflammation of the nearby oil glands..."  (In both cases, I have supplied the underlining.)

The problems some of you have mentioned with eyelashes and with the chalazion may be linked to these eyelid margin diseases.

The use of warm compresses, eyelid scrubs, good hygiene (and, possibly if prescribed, an antibiotic ointment) can help to decrease the symptoms.

For more information on eyelid margin diseases, go to the American Academy of Ophthalmology site = http://www.aao.org  OR  EyeLid Margin Disease, Including Blepharitis < click here

Once again, we see the "duo" of bacteria and inflammation working together again--no surprise!

Regards, Larry
