Hi Everyone,

First, know that I cleared this with Dr. Marshall.

A little about myself for those of you who aren't familiar with me. I'm 18 months into the MP--after learning about it in 2002, took me a couple years to find a doc. One of the wonderful things that's coming back while I'm healing is my creativity.

Like many of you, I have more time than money. I've wanted to donate more funds to ARF than I've been able to. I've come up with an idea that I'd like to discuss with y'll 'cuz there's no way I can do this on my own.

I've started a yahoo group called MP Artists. I'd like for those of us who do any kind of fine art or craft to consider donating things to auction with the proceeds going to the Autoimmunity Research Foundation. I'm thinking that perhaps using eBay charity auction as the selling tool (which I as of yet know virtually nothing about). Or, perhaps a physical auction if we have enough items and volunteers to man and run it.

If you're not an artist, or even an MPer, but want to help, we're gonna need lots of support to run this. Do you know about selling on eBay?, advertising?, press reports?, organizing people and activities? Can you consider donating some art/craft item or supplies you have lying around you're not using.

Perhaps we can start the discussion here and if there's enough interest, move it over to the yahoo group. Here's the description I've written for the MP Artists' home page:

We are artists recovering from Th1 disease with the Marshall Protocol. Our projects are for raising funds for the Autoimmunity Research Foundation, http://autoimmunityresearch.org, a California non-profit. If you're not an artist, but an MP supporter with some time, experience and/or organizational skills, and are willing to help/support us, we welcome you with open arms.

We are not here to discuss/debate our disease(s), treatment, or recovery. No solicitations for health products and NO SPAMMING ALLLOWED.

Messages from new members are moderated briefly so we can weed out the spammers. Please be patient as it may take a little time for your first post to appear--after all, most of us are in various stages of healing :) ...

Well, what do you think?

'til later,
Jillian

Trevor,

If you have time, and if we do use eBay, here's the info on Giving Works:
http://pages.ebay.com/help/sell/nonprofit.html

Do you have an opinion on it?

Thank you,
Jillian

Jillian,
I have no expertise in fundraising at all. I have no idea how to even start the planning.

I can handle the biology, but am hopeless with fundraising:)

This is especially important as we move towards Phase 3 trials, where we will need to pay the costs of the patients in those trials, and even pay some of the Universities who will hold them. We need to figure out who we know who can help us, and the best way for us to move forward together.

Autoimmunity Research (Foundation) Inc is now an IRS registered 501(c)3 charity

Dear Jillian,

A great idea. Even if it doesn't raise a huge amount, the first try, every little bit helps. Plus it would spread the word. And there will be an ongoing need for $, so we could all learn over time.

I also would like to donate, but don't have much money now - I hope to be have more once I finish the MP and can do something, anything.

I can knit now (in bed, on the couch) and could make some lacy triangle shawls. Similar items sell for $150 in craft shops. They cost me about $30 for yarn and take about 40 hours to knit - not an earning proposition in real life. I have no clue what you might get at an auction but it seems worth a try.

I have little access to brain functions and couldn't really help with the whole ebay thing, but I can knit like a demon.

Kathleen

Hi Jillian,

I'd be happy to donate some jewelry I've been making.  It's a hobby I started while sitting around the house and I wondered what I was going to do will it all. Mostly it's stretch bracelets but I'm going to start making earrings and necklaces.  I made my niece her bridesmaid's wedding jewelry.

I don't know anything about ebay so I can't help you there.

Judy

Kathleen and Judy,

GREAT! This is the kinda stuff I was thinking about, we're not all trained 'fine' artists. Some might be able to make one block that will be in a quilt, or donate supplies to one of you. I have a friend that paints 'pet' rocks that sell like hotcakes, another that does gourd birdhouses that she can't keep in stock! (hmmm, gonna have to contact them to see if they'd like to donate something to sell to the cause.)

But, if we are budding artists, this can also be of benefit. It gets names out to the public. Take a look at how eBay Giving Works has helped one artist:
http://www.missionfish.org/toolsforall/Iversoncasestudy.pdf
(MissionFish.org certifies charities for eBay and seems to 'manage' some aspects of eBay's Giving Works.)

I've recently been checking out fiber artists and what they're doing. Even small art 'fiber' postcards (4in. x 6in., about 10cm x 15 cm) postcards sell for a minimum of $25. I could make one of those a month even if I was IMPing heavily! That, by the way, is more than I've been able to donate on a regular monthly basis to ARF!

Trevor,

You mean there's something we non-scientist types could do that you can't :D;) ?!? Maybe ARF needs to consider appointing someone that could work with us?

If we use eBay Giving Works, there are a couple of options. First, ARF would need to register as a 501(c)3 charity with MissionFish.org. Then either a seller can indicate what percentage of a sale goes automatically and directly to the charity, or the charity registers as the seller. Here's a simple breakdown of the two options:
http://www.missionfish.org/About/howitworks.jsp

There are advantages to the charity being the seller. Obviously getting the charity's name out in the public for one. From my understanding (just took my abx yesterday so could be a foggy here ), eBay cuts registered charities a break, there are basically no seller or insertion fees and 100% of the proceeds go directly to the charity's account (some fees are charged but later credited back to the charity). PayPal and some other fees still apply.

The other option is that sellers donate a predetermined amount of a sale to their designated charity.

If ARF did not want to register itself, I'm thinking a good option might then be to open a separate seller's (and PayPal) account, like MP Artists & Supporters (?), and all the proceeds, minus fees/costs, would go to ARF.

Please keep the thoughts and ideas flowing.

Thanks and 'til later,
Jillian

I could join in with Kathleen and knit some lace doilies. I have seen tiny ones mounted to greeting cards, and I could definitely do some of those--maybe pass the finished doilies along to someone else who could do the calligraphy and make the cards.

Or, I could make beanie hats, socks, lace chokers, whatever will sell. I don't know how to sell crafts so I would need some advice.

Great idea, Jillian!  I can see those creative juices of yours really starting to flow.  I would be happy to help with giving craft items to donate.  I do handmade cards, have a best friend who does quilts, beading and felting.  I'm sure she would be happy to donate some items.  Now I can start creating things with this in mind and earmark the "best" stuff for it!  :D

Good thought, Jillian!

I was wondering if we might expand it for the non artistic and non craft oriented people.  They could perhaps put up items for sale on E bay with proceeds going to the Foundation that they might normally sell at a garage sale.  Also, when people stop needing some of their NoIRs, they could donate them for sale.

Another idea I had would be if someone had an item of somewhat larger item (or could get it donated by a business) that we could then sell raffle tickets for it?

I don't think I would have time to get very involved in it myself, but thought I'd throw these ideas out there.

Great idea Jillian. I have some experience selling on ebay. I have a small ebay business selling used items (mainly books) but have not put a lot of effort into it. Mainly because I have not had the energy.

However have had enough experience to put forward some thoughts to consider:

1. If you wanted to use the DIRECT selling approach and make the charity the seller, then that will mean someone has to be responsible to manage all this. i.e. who will list the items? mail them out? determine starting price and postage? communicate with the bidders? Ebay can be quite labor intensive. So my suggestion would be that people who have things to sell set up their own ebay accounts and nomate a % of the profits to go to the charity.

2. That would also overcome the problem of how to "collect" the items at a central location. Also makes it easier in a global sense. My books all sell locally because the postage would be horrific otherwise.

3. Setting yourself up on ebay is quite simple. You dont' need an ebay store. You can auction your items one by one. I use both the auction and the store concept because books that don't sell by auction, i chuck into my store where it only costs 10 cents a month to list the item.

4. However there are costs to think about. I pay ebay around $17 a month to keep the store going. And with each item I sell, ebay charge fees for listing and for selling. Paypal also charge fees. Most books sell for very little. So I am struggling at the moment to keep enough books going to cover all the fees. So far I have found that the Australian Post Office has made most of the money from my ebay business. However...that is because books are so heavy. A friend sells jewellery and they are making quite a bit of money because it is cheap to post. So that needs to be kept in mind as well.

5. Ebay is labor intensive. To sell an item quickly they recommend taking a photo. So...you take a photo, upload to PC, edit and then upload to ebay. You need to provide quite a bit of information for each item. It takes me about 30 minutes to list one item. However if you have multiple items of similar description this can go more quickly.

6. Then there is the communication with the bidder/buyer. Processing financials. Packaging and posting and post sales communication/feedback. All this takes quite a bit of time. Packaging materials are not cheap either so that has to be factored into the sale price either as a component of price or postage.

If you sell items that attract a larger price then all of the above is not so bad. However if you sell smaller items that only fetch a few dollars, it can be quite bothersome.

I am quite happy to try this out with my existing store. If we can get the Autoimmune Foundation to register as a charity with MissionFish I will start putting up some books for sale and nominating 50% of the proceeds. That will leave me enough for packaging and other costs.

My mother embroiders small hand towels which look nice in the kitchen and bathroom. I am sure she would be happy to donate some. I also have other relatives/friends who sell on ebay so they may also be happy to donate some things. Question is how does this work when you support an overseas charity from Australia?

Inge.
P.S. Mum is already sorting through her finished towels to give to me to donate! She is having a cataract removed from one eye next Monday and feels she will be able to make lots more once that is behind her!

Jillian,

That is a wonderful idea.  I can help with funds for materials for the artists.  Please let me know when we get things going.

Hi All,

Well, got hit a bit hard with this abx combo, then had to go to the 'big city' today (an hour away). Am wiped out--seeing as it was 90, sunny, humid and don't have air conditioning in the car, both Bree and I did very, very well. Love this getting better stuff!

Been mulling over your suggestions and offerings, thank you so much. Will comment more tomorrow, I'm going to bed!

'til later,
Jillian

I’d like to use this space to announce a joint Proal-Albert project that aims to raise some money for the home ship.

Ever wanted to make a statement about the existence of CWD bacteria? About the fact that perhaps the people around you may want to think twice before guzzling down vitamin D? Now is your chance!

We’ve created a mug with a humorous depiction of a CWD bacterium. Please don’t fill it with coffee. Instead, try Trevor’s delicious low-carb chocolate drink. Mmmm!

All proceeds from the mugs will be donated to Autoimmunity Research Foundation.

So keep the orders coming. Give one to your doctor for Christmas! Make sure it’s out on the table when that annoying neighbor who rolls her eyes at your darkened windows comes over! Get a mug for each member of the family and have a toast to health and happiness!

Order here: http://www.cafepress.com/cwdgear
Mugs are priced at $18.00. The mugs cost $11.99, For every mug you buy $6.01 will go to the Autoimmunity Research Foundation.

Questions or comments? Contact Amy at amy.proal at gmail dot com

Sincerely,
Amy and Paul

Amy and Paul,

Way too kewl!!! Fun isn't it, I'll be putting my order in next month.

I haven't abandoned this thread, but have had horrible painful edema, can't walk, sausage fingers, and very much worse than normal brain fog. Believe I figured out what it is, an allergy rx to a new food as none of the MP adjustments are relieving it.

Trevor, and the directors of ARF: how would the ARF feel about registering as a charity with eBay? If not, those of us that sell on eBay could just donate as we see fit.

Those of you interested in discussing the nuts and bolts of the actual projects, timing, etc., with this, please join the yahoo group. If you don't know how to do it, PM me with an email address and I'll invite you.

Jillian

Great Idea Jillian! Actually most of us are already in position to donate proceeds. If you have an Ebay account most also have set up their PayPal account. ARF is also setup on PayPal. After a sale just Send money to ARF through PayPal

One can also set up a seperate Ebay account and accept donations from others. owners of the donations can take pictures, upload them to the Ebay account person and when sold the item can be sent directly to the customer via the donator.

Just some Ideas.

Big John
