My doctor called in a prescription for 90 Benicar at 4 per day to CVS, enough for 22 days. They ran it through my Medco coverage that BC/BS carries. I was only charged the $30 copay. I'll let you know if I get a notice denying any future coverage, which I anticipate.
Thank you, Kathleen

Good news. I got my 90 day supply of Benicar (4 per day) through Walgreens, which is my BC/BS of Florida, Medco plan provider. It cost me a total of $60 which I think is pretty great. Whatever you did with Medco must have worked, thank you!!!!!!! This definitely makes it easier to relax and prepare to give the MP plenty of time to make magic.

Dear Dr. Marshall,
I was trying to respond concerning Medco. I was just refused Benicar. I'm not computer savy so today is 11/19/04. They did use patient safety as reason to refuse filling my order. I would be happy to answer any questions you have.
Thank-you,

I've just heard about another patient who's being refused Benicar by Medco. Patients in Washington State have a right to an outside review if their insurance company refuses coverage. I think I already have a pretty good idea how to respond, but I'd appreciate any suggestions from patients who've succeeded in getting coverage after an initial denial. I'll update this board as the case proceeds.

Sujay,
I have put Medco on legal notice, but they just won't change until it starts to hurt them. We will have to sue, I suspect.
Sarcinfo moderator Caroline said that they were quoting emails to her when talking about the safety issues. We surmise that they were printouts of the messages posted at Penny's Yahoo board, but we don't know for sure just yet.
If you could pin Medco down on what gives rise to their safety concerns I would be appreciative. I can send you the FDA safety review stuff that I have already sent Medco, and it says nothing about a lack of safety. Medco is apparently taking the attitude that we have to prove the safety, I am taking the attitude that the FDA reviewed safety studies up to 320mg and never found (or set) any maximum safe dose. If you read the package insert carefully you can see that 40mg is purely the maximum useful dose for hypertension. The safety stduies at 80mg were quite extensive, as the FDA noted, and their graph of hypotensive effect goes out to 80mg. There were a number of pharmacokinetic linearity studies out to 120,240 and 320mg.
