How to darken your screen by changing colors

Here's a simple tip for reducing the amount of light your computer screen emits. Obviously, you can turn down the brightness. But, you can also change your color preferences so that most programs and web sites display using darker colors.

Instead of dark text on a white background, I use amber and white text on a dark background. This dramatically reduces the amount of bright light coming from the computer screen.

In Windows XP, go to the Control Panel, Display. In the Display Properties window, use the Appearance tab, then click the Advanced button. From there you can custom configure whatever colors you prefer.

Note that some poorly designed programs and Web sites will ignore your color preferences and instead force you back to a bright screen, but most will cooperate, and that should result in less light exposure for your eyes.

One trick that I've learned when my eyes still don't like the brightness and/or I have problems reading any text (such as when it's small), is to "highlight" the text on most any source as though I was going to copy the text.

"Highlighting" causes the background around the text to go black and the letters to turn white. >>>

Left click on mouse and press 'select all'.

See Is my new computer screen making me sick?

You can change your pdf settings to any colour you want.

Open a pdf document and go to Edit - Preferences (if it isn't there, press Ctrl and K).

Select Accessibility from the menu on the left.

Select Replace Document Colours, and select the colours you want for background and text.

...........................................................................................

For pdf settings you should be able to choose any colour of text and any colour of background.  When you're on the Accessibility page, which is headed Document Colors Options, you can select 'Use High Contrast Colours' and choose one of the pre-set colour schemes.  Or you can select 'Custom Color', then click the colour square beside 'Page Background' and select a colour, then do the same for 'Document text'.

To change the background colour of emails in Outlook, go to Tools - Options - Mail format - Stationery & Fonts - Stationery Picker.  Select 'Blank' for Stationery, then press 'Edit'.  Go to 'Background', select 'Color' and click the arrow to choose your colour.

(further info, see the Adobe site http://tinyurl.com/89tdg)

There is also an other alternative. The FREE pdf-reader foxit is downloadable here:
http://www.foxitsoftware.com/download.htm

This reader is freeware and is many times faster then adobe reader because of no extra not much used options, plugins etc. being loaded. But it has the ability to change the document background, so this is a good possible alternative for reading PDF's for MP'ers.

You can change the background:
Edit --> Preferences --> Document Colors

Most persons on this board want to read PDF's and as mentioned also here, change there background color's. Foxit PDF reader does this things perfectly and efficiently without loading all those plugins and api's 99% of the people don't need. Foxit is compatible with Win95 --> Win2003 so that's also no issue for the Windows users. And Foxit is also totally free of spy and adware.

The newer Adobe version should also do the job but really less fast (just try it out ;))

For those using Mac OS X you can go to System Preferences > Universal Access and in the display section choose 'White on Black" plus check 'Use Graysscale'. This gives you black page backgrounds, which on my system reduces the lux to 1/3 of the "Black on White'. I find it great for reading any text.

Also to reduce screen britness below the limit allowed in System Preferences > Displays one can download the free program 'Brightness Control' at

http://www.splasm.com/products/productbrightness.html

With Brightness Control set at the half way mark and using 'White on Black' my lux reading at my glasses is 3 lux. Then since I"m using the 10% NoIR my eyes are only getting .3 lux.

This is plenty for me to read by and not having the glarey white page background feels better to my eyes.

Changing the Universal Access display turns all images into their negatives? The avatars are pretty funny looking. :) But for text, this is great!

In regards to a too dark keyboard and thus not being able to wear glasses...

If you have a Mac, Labtick is a great software that brightens the keyboard so I can actually wear my darkest NoIRs and see what I'm doing - no problem.

If you don't have a Mac, you can try using a small USB light plugged into your computer. You can maneuver it wherever you want it to shine on the keyboard. I used this initially before finding Labtick. My guy put a paper hood over it with black tape, so the light didn't shine in my eyes, just directly on the keyboard.

I use Linux, and I have darkened my apps using the appropriate config files. If anybody wants a copy of my .Xresources or .sunclockrc file, pm me. For some jobs, tho, I just use the command line and avoid the ugly bright windows altogether. I use the Tenebrific theme for Gnome/Metacity, and the Inverse skin for XMMS. There are several excellent dark background images in the Propaganda collection.

A program I find indispensible is a screen magnifier. For Linux it is xmag, and there are probably a bunch of freeware ones for Windows (it might even come with one). It really helps with reading text within images.

These programs allow you to write a document in any application with a pitch black background. The only thing you see is the text you're writing.

WriteRoom (for Mac):
http://www.hogbaysoftware.com/product/writeroom

DarkRoom (for Windows):
http://they.misled.us/dark-room

At least for Mac, you can even go into the Preferences for WriteRoom, enable the "Edit in WR" plug-in, and use WriteRoom to fill in anything-- a Word document, a form such as this one, cloaked in near darkness. See preferences for details.

On a Mac OS X system (version 10.3 maybe, 10.4 for sure) open System Preferences, click on Universal Access, and in the Display section select the radio button "White on Black" and check box "Use grayscale". Since most backgrounds are white they then become black, browser pages, word processing, ... . Only occasionally do you get blinded when a web page is black and becomes white with these settings. Also may want to go to System Preferences>Desktop & Screen Saver to select a darker desktop.

Need to remember to undo these settings before starting a DVD or watching TV/any video on computer as the system becomes very unresponsive trying to do video when inverted, difficult to move mouse and select menu items.

*Go to the my account button at the top of the page, and click. Press preferences tab. and then see Board Theme: the drop down has a choice of default, default2 or shades. Press save to refresh screen and try any or each of them to assess.

*~shadowzone writes:
I have come across the best program ever for us Apple Mac users! It dims your computer screen, with easily changable settings.
Check out the program here: FGDesktopUtility. The program is freeware, meaning it is free to download and use.

You will see that it is made to be used as a spotlight, darkening the screen except for a bright area around the mouse. However, in settings (CTRL+ALT, or via the Help menu), you can turn the spotlight off, so that the whole screen is being dimmed. The 'Alpha' setting changes the amount of dimming up and down. You can also change the colour of the screen dimming, which means you can make the screen appear more red, green, or blue - which you could use to correct the colour change that happens while wearing the amber Noirs.

* Highlight text for easier reading -if you also just point and click your mouse and drag it across the page it highlights the whole page in a soft green and makes it much, much easier to read without so much eyestrain. I hope this can help others! ~KevnR
