Today I ordered 3 boxes (of 98) of 40mg Votum from the Munich pharmacy, to be sent priority airmail post. I was quoted 306.40 Euros, which works out at just over $AUD500. I don't know how much longer priority mail takes over express mail, but it looks like I'm going to find out!
Regards, Peter

Hi Peter,
Just wondering... If I'm in the states now, could I send back Benicar to myself priority post - it seems like the same process, unless I'm not seeing something right? Because these drugs aren't available in Aus, I thought getting them through customs would be a nightmare.... but looks ok.
Thanks Peter
Tam :-)

Hi all - just an update.
I've just made contact with the TGA and the PBS scheme and wanted to post a portion of their response re Benicar.
from the TGA: -------------------------------------------
I am unable to provide you with information about whether olmesartan is
currently being supplied in Australia under the Pharmaceutical Benefits
Scheme. May I suggest that you contact Roche Products Australia who are the sponsor of olmesartan in Australia. Their contact details are (02) 9454
9000.
The guy from the PBS said that Benicar is not on the current list and to contact the manufacturer.
Also received confirmation that you can send Benicar back to Aus, at a 3 month supply at a time - for a maximum of 15 month supply in a 12 month period.
I'm about to call Roche - Let you know how I go.
Cheers, Tam.

G'day, Tam.
I understand that according to TGA rules you are allowed to bring in 3 months supply in your luggage, but you must have a copy of the prescription or a doctor's letter for it.
All the best... Peter

Tam,
I sent an email to Pfizer (who apparently market here for Roche) about a week ago. No reply, and I don't really expect one.
Today I asked a Pharmacist I've known for many years to contact Pfizer and ask when they intend to market Benicar here. Maybe that will get a reponse...
Best... Peter

My order arrived this afternoon -- just 5 days! The charge hasn't even made it to my credit card statement. Customs had not opened the package.
I asked for the package to be sent "airmail priority post", for which I was quoted 40 Euros.
The postage sticker says: "Deutsche Post" and the date (17.08.05); "FILIALE" and a number, "14.05 EUR"; "Recommandé".
All the best, Peter

Today I received an email from a Pfizer representative, stating that olmesartan has not been approved by the TGA, and they could not say when it might be available in Australia.
My pharmacist friend has received information about olmesartan from Pfizer, but has not read it yet. I hope to speak to him about it tomorrow. Will advise if there's anything new.

I have been given permission by the author to quote this email from Pfizer:
Date: Tue, 30 Aug 2005 23:52:00 -0400
Dear Mr de Jager
Thank you for your request for information regarding the availability of
olmesartan in Australia.
Olmesartan has yet to be approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration
(TGA) in Australia. Consequently, we are unable to advise as to when this
medicine may be available in Australia.
I hope this information is useful. Thank you for contacting Pfizer Australia
and for your interest in olmesartan.
Yours sincerely

I have made a few calls, of course all of this is a 'private business matters' and can not be confirm.Never the less reading between the lines, I understand that
TGA has approved benicar
Pfizer can no longer provide benicar through their special access scheme as this was for unapproved drugs by the TGA.
P. Back is the contractors for the PBS process. It seems that discussions between Pfizer and Government about the COST of benicar to the PBS, is bogged down at present. Pfizer veiw would be, justifying the high $ ,the gov's argument is that there is already many arbs .
A timely fax , letter or call to ministers would be of benefit.
points you may want to make, there is no substitute, uk have it on their health scheme, the saving to the health scheme , other meds, hospital ,doctors fees disability pensions etc.
I don't see any reason to mention the amount of benicar you need

G'day,
I saw my GP on Tuesday 27/9 and he rang the TGA (in Canberra) and they told him something and his face lit up and he said really! But then they told him it was neither approved or registered and faxed him the forms to complete to apply for approval (Benicar) for me. I think it was the special access thing referred to in previous posts. He is planning to go over the form with another interested Dr and apply and then if it is approved they can use the application and modify for other patients.
FWIW, Cheers
Vicki

hi,
Vicky I hope you get the benicar.BOTH the tga AND Pfizer have their own sas{special access scheme}....but they are two different things .
Tga's means they will ALLOW you to use benicar [bought from overseas].As all aussies mp have been doing .I don't think many have bother using this process-with any problems. Some doctors feel more comfortable using the tga's sas.
Pfizer's sas, see earlier posts

For what it's worth, our doctor personally liased with Pfizer 6 months ago about getting Benicar in for 4 of his patients and he had no joy.

Some fellow Aussies may also have been following the Canada Benicar info thread at http://www.marshallprotocol.com/forum11/4320.html
I have been in touch with the Canadian pharmacy, and the first line of their reply is the only one that matters:
1. As a Canadian Pharmacist I can only supply from a Canadian doctor's prescription.
Now if the Canadians can find a local compounding pharmacist who can supply Benicar (Olmesartan Medoxomil), surely we innovative Aussies can do the same?
All the best, Peter

I may be able to obtain D from USA and prepare 100 capsules (100mg). the cost will be $350 for 100 capsules. Kind regards, ali kozanoglu. email address is enquiries@tcprx.com

Communication between Peter de J and myself:
Peter:
Yes, just got a reply from Yetvart telling me. I had so many queries that I emailed him.
You're on the right track in terms of getting a compounding pharmacy there to put it up for you.
However, I wouldn't mess with putting it in forums asking others to get on it. Just find a compounding pharmacy in your area (a big one - ask the local hospital for a reference). Then go directly to the managing pharmacist and put the proposal to him (or phone, if you have difficulty getting out).
You may save hours of postings and replies with vague information.
Don't rely on "someone" else to get it done!
Good Luck
Bill
G'day, Bill.
I've been in touch with the pharmacy, and unfortunately they need a
Canadian doctor's prescription. However, your innovative approach
has set me thinking that there's no reason why we Aussies can't do
the same, and I've posted that challenge on the Benicar for Aussies thread.
See ya later, mate!
Peter

The Therapeutic Goods Adminstration (TGA) effectively approved Benicar as per Government Gazette announcement on 7 September, 2005
( http://www.tga.gov.au/docs/html/adec/adec0241.htm )
This means that Pfizer Australia is now legally able to supply Benicar to Pharmacies and to Medical Practioners, without any recourse to special access conditions.
Generally TGA approval is simply a precurser to the drug company seeking to have the product then listed on the PBS The PBS committee will simply not even consider any drug which does not already have TGA approval.
Generally drug companies will not bother to distribute drugs in Australia unless they receive PBS approval - at least for some usage of the drug.
The difficulty in getting Benicar onto the PBS is that for the conventional usage (hypertension) it does not offer any clear cost/benefit advantages over existing ARBs which are already listed on the PBS
Perhaps an easier way through is for patients to lobby Pfizer for sale direct to requesting Medical Practioners, because the PBS route will be both lengthy and uncertain as to outcome.

my compounding chemist is waiting to hear from the canada's compounding chemist .
He did ring pfizer they said "tga had not yet approved it and to contact them again early in the new year."
I explain to my chemist that they were telling 'porkies'.
At least if we can get it compounded while waiting for the pbs, those who can , can claim private insurance.
