How do I know if I'm ready for the phase two?

The second and third phase guidelines are available to study participants upon request at completion of phase one.

It is important not to stay in phase one too long. Bacteria may exist that are resistant to minocycline and they may repopulate tissues cleared of bacteria. Low-dose combinations of MP antibiotics are far more effective at killing CWD than antibiotic monotherapy.

Don't wait until you feel well to ask about progressing to the next phase, because that may not happen on just Benicar and minocycline.

Before you move to phase 2, you should experiment with minocycline and Benicar to see how they work for you. Extend the mino dosing schedule to every 72 hours to see if symptoms are dampened or if more immunopathology is provoked. And conversely, when symptoms peak (not necessarily intolerable), reduce or stop the mino dose to see if that dampens symptoms. You should also try taking lower dose minocycline every six or 12 hours to see if mino has an anti-flammatory effect for you.

When a symptom approaches intolerable try an extra Benicar or increase to every four hours around the clock to see if that measure is effective to quell the symptom. The resulting information can be added to your personal tool kit.

You need to gain experience adjusting MP meds to maintain tolerable immune system reactions in phase one. This skill will carry you smoothly through the protocol. When you have learned to manage on a day-to-day basis, you will be equipped to handle a crisis should it occur.

You might be ready for phase two if:

-if you have been in phase one for more than 3 months

-your symptoms are pretty much the same during the two or three days following 100mg minocycline

-you have not been able to dampen intolerable immunopathology by the usual medication adjustments (you may have reached the maximum tolerability level of mino alone for now).

-you are protecting yourself (and especially your eyes with NoIR sunglasses) from natural and artificial lights to ensure symptoms are not caused by light exposure.

Recheck your 25-D

If your initial 25-D was above 20ng/ml, you should retest to make sure your efforts to reduce ingested vitmain D are working. There is no need to retest the more expensive 1,25-D. See How often should I test D levels?

Before you proceed to phase two, ask your doctor about What the tests you need to monitor your progress on the MP.

Send for the MP questionnaire

It takes a day or two to get a response after the questionnaire is returned so send for it, and fill it and return, in plenty of time.

ie as soon as or before you start mino 100mg level.
* as soon as a Moderator suggests to do so.

- to read the valuable feedback information,
- to access the background information in the phases 2/3 forum and
- to ask any questions before your next doctor's appointment.

Doc may rely on you to tell him/her when and how to progress to the next Phase and you will need to ask Doc for a prescription for the new antibiotic.

Depending on your circumstances, the next phase of adding a second antibiotic may be Phase One-modified, Modified Phase Two, or Phase Two.

To obtain the questionnaire for phase 2 send an email to

with 'request Ph 2 Q' in the subject line.
