Hello All.

I am wondering what the effects of consuming alcohol are while on the MP?

I can remember hearing years ago that alcohol can impair the effectiveness of abx and should not be consumed. Not sure if this is fact or fiction.

What about drinking alcohol while on benicar?

Any thoughts?

Beer? Wine? Spirits?

Thanks,

Zach

Zach,

People with TH1 conditions seem to be uniquely susceptible to the pernicious effects of alcohol. I know I can't tolerate it, and I've heard anecdotally from a number of other people with TH1 conditions that this intolerance is par for the course.

What exactly is happening on a biological level when you have that spritzer and/or fruity drink? I don't know. All I know is that all varieties of alcohol make me feel terrible, and if you're any different, I would be very surprised.

Paul

I have absolutely no problem tollerating alcohol white on the protocol.

I enjoy my wine with my evening meal and the weekend of mild brain destruction - I too am interested in the answer to your question.

Cheers

Guss

I am also curious about this.  I have not had any problems with alcohol before or since beginning MP.  I have only drunk a half glass of red wine on occasions since starting MP, but no beer.  I thought that I had read, and might be completely mistaken, that Dr M drank wine during MP???  I would love to have a bit of beer but I thought I had seen some concern about whether the grains might somehow contain folic acid or Vit D?  I don't really understand how this might be, but I have steered clear for this reason.  I am wondering, if the above is a problem for beer, if the imported varieties from Japan, Germany, etc might be ok.

Dr. Marshall has said on SarcInfo,

"Alcohol consumption does not affect therapy. Unless you are really sensitive to D intake (and some are), beer should be OK. I have a glass of plum wine every few days, and sometimes a little brandy, so I doubt that a little alcohol with your minocycline is going to make you explode in a puff of smoke, or anything like that."

and add here in May 2007

I can tell you definitively that alcohol no longer has any strange effects on you after you have recovered from the inflammatory disease.

There could be a host of reasons for problems while the disease process is active.

Member JC posted May 2007: With summer here I have had the itch for some cold beers and fortunately for me they have not been making me ill. The only thing I noticed is that my arthritis my knees has come back a bit after a night of drinking but luckily not nearly as bad as pre- MP.  When I had 3 sips of red wine one night the next day felt as though I drank my own bottle. I'll  be saying NO to wine and Yes to beer, still haven't tried hard alcohol but don't really desire it either.

September 2007:
Carol:
I was a regular "social drinker", wine mostly, prior to starting the MP and for about the first year I was on the MP.  Then, rather suddenly, I developed a real intolerance for alcoholic beverages.  My symptoms were not exactly like yours, but they would come on on pretty quickly and occurred after consuming only modest amounts of alcohol.

Now I'm back to being able to enjoy an alcoholic beverage with no ill effects, but my intolerance probably lasted for a year.

I would say this is a very individual thing.  I for one have such problems with dizziness that I avoid alcohol, and the sulfites in most wine make me quite ill. I sure miss that Irish whiskey and Guinness.  So count yourself as lucky if you can tolerate booze in moderation!  P.B.

I can tolerate about 1 oz of vodka or similar liquor - rarely drink wine because have other allergy problems with it if I drink it more than very occasionally (kicks up endometriosis a la candida theory).

I do think that I am more susceptible to its effects in past few years, but haven't noticed being on MP makes anything any different. . .

1 oz is all I want/tolerate/etc. This is new for me in the past few years; before could have 2-3 drinks over a period of time with little problem. Actually, come to think of it, no problem now, except I just don't WANT it. . . body is saying, "no more".
