Without dwelling on the horror of the situation, this story does illustrate one point well - Humans don't need sunlight to generate adequate vitamin D for immune function.

According to reports, the children are undergoing tests in hospital, in particular for problems with their eyes and skin due to the lack of daylight.
The children were reported to be very pale but in a good physical state.
Dr Colin Michie, a paediatrician at Ealing Hospital in West London, says the fact the they were deprived of sunlight for so long may not have had too much of an adverse affect on them.
"It is possible that if you eat a good diet, you won't necessarily need much sunlight," he told the BBC News website.
"There could have been enough in their diet to make up for it."

God bless those children!
Their sacrifice will open up the eyes of doctors to the unnecessity of vitamin D supplementation!

But the London paediatrician also said that Austrians are known to "add a lot of vitamins to their food". So if they had vitamin D supplements, it only shows that sunlight itself isn't essential, not that D supplements aren't.
But then, one of the three children is in a coma in hospital anyway, so maybe it doesn't show anything.

That comment may have been added by the doc to explain how they were able to tolerate lack of sunlight without ill effect - if you believe exogenous Vitamin D is necessary in the first place it is the only rational explanation. But somehow I don't believe that the father was the kind of caring guy who would think about supplementation. Austria is a country with little access to quality supplements anyway due to draconian legislation. And the mother had clocked 24 years in the cellar without hospitalization.
