Not sure if this is the best forum for this post but I happened to listen to a broadcast on our ABC (Australia's' public broadcaster) that discussed bacteria and especially bacteria that live in biofilms to the effect that these guys (regrettably) are quite smart.

I found this book in my local public library under a variant title:
The Invisible Kingdom: from the tips of our fingers to the tops of our trash, inside the curious world of microbes. New York, Basic Books, 2009. ISBN 978046501887 or 0465018874.
The author is witty and it is a fantastic voyage to the microscopic, but massively influential world of microbiology. A fast read, too.

Hi all--I have been on a quest to educate myself on the basics of microbiology so that I can understand more of the science and great stuff being posted here.
So, one of the Christmas presents I unwrapped this year was......drumroll.......you guessed it: Small Wonders: How Microbes Rule The World
This is truly a "delightful little book" packed full of a surprisingly entertaining explanation of all things microbiological for all of us perfectly normal people who don't spend our lives looking through a microscope.
I don't know why it is more expensive than might be normal for a paperback of this size, but I'm glad my DH splurged on it and put it under the tree.
Take a look at the first 7 pages on the "look inside" option here at the amazon link:
Small Wonders...
This "look inside" option is on a very similar book by the same author. The first pages are almost identical to the ones in "Small Wonders..." I'm guessing that if you don't want to spend the extra money, the other one is probably equally good.

Thanks for the heads up on this book Sherry and Marysue! I checked out the amazon.com Look Inside and decided to get a copy of this book! It looks like a nice introduction to microbes.
