-----------------STOP-PRESS-----------------------------On the final day of the Karolinska Days of Molecular Medicine DMM2008 Conference, "Cognitive Dysfunction in Disease," Paul Albert interviewed each of Meg, Amy and I, memorializing our recollections of the event, and summarizing what we had been presenting:-------------------------------------------------------------- Following on from the success I had at DMM2006 and DMM2007, the Foundation is helping to present three posters at this years DMM2008, at Karolinska Institute, in Stockholm. Amy Proal's presentation is: "COGNITIVE DYSFUNCTION IN WOMEN WITH CHRONIC FATIGUE SYNDROME" Meg Mangin will present: "Monitoring cognitively-disabled subjects in an interactive Internet-based clinical trial of a multi-factorial treatment based on a molecular model of chronic disease" and I will present: "VDR NUCLEAR RECEPTOR IS KEY TO RECOVERY OF COGNITIVE DYSFUNCTION" This conference represents our best opportunity to place our science in front of the World's foremost researchers and administrators. It is one of the very few multi-disciplinary conferences still being held, and the program this year is very strong indeed: http://www.mgh.harvard.edu/cvrc/meetings_molecular_agenda.html (the bio of the keynote speaker, Prof Eric Kandel, is here. ) I doubt that we will agree with much of what is being presented, but it does represent the best thinking that is out there right now, and will give us all a wonderful background, as we move forward into the neurological indications. I had the opportunity to chat with Eric Kandel during the recent conference at the Salk Institute, and was amazed at how open-minded the neuro-biologists seem to be  Additionally, Liz and Paul will be joining Meg, Amy and I, so we can take every opportunity to let the scientists at the Conference know what we have been doing, and where we are going. Thanks to all of you that helped us during our recent fundraising, allowing us to plan to mount such a major effort at this conference, as well as at the upcoming 6th International Congress on Autoimmunity, in Portugal, in September. Marvelous. You are turning the tide. I volunteer for the Road Back to distribute the list of docs to those who email for it. More and more patients report that as they approach these docs many (docs) are now saying that they prefer MP. It is great to see Amy join you. She has a prodigious intellect and indefatigable energy, finally becoming unshackled from the microbes. This is great. |

Congratulations Dr. Marshall on your continued involvement in this conference. (Also, it's great to see Meg and Amy adding their research to the posters presented!) From the summary, it looks like it will be interesting as well as a great opportunity to both share and gain insights in this area. From the summary: Days of Molecular Medicine highlights the interface between the underlying biological mechanisms of disease and the development of therapeutic strategies. This year's meeting, Cognitive Dysfunction in Disease: Mechanisms and Therapies, will focus first on the genetic and molecular basis of cognitive functions and behavior, for instance learning and memory, attention and emotion. This understanding will lay the groundwork for presentations in the second part of the meeting on pathological mechanisms and new directions in the development of treatments for cognitive, psychiatric and neurological disorders such as autism, schizophrenia, obsessive compulsive disorder, Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease. Do you think that the reference to "pathological mechanisms" indicates in any way that they are becoming more open to the proposal for a bacterial pathogenisis for these conditions? |

The biologists understand what Paul Ewald told Amy - http://bacteriality.com/2008/02/11/ewald/ Evolutionary biologists understand that if an allele (a sequence that codes for a gene) were to code for a disease it would slowly get weeded out of the population, particularly since people who are sick are much less likely to reproduce (especially people with a severe disease like schizophrenia). Yet a person’s chances of getting schizophrenia are 1 in 100. The reality is that faulty genes cannot maintain this frequency. If schizophrenia was a genetic disease, then according to the rules of mathematics, it would only occur in about 1 in every 10,000 people. The current frequency of the disease is just far too high.so they tend to be more open to the concept of pathogens. They do have disbelief, however, that an entire microbiota could have eluded discovery for so long It should be a great conference, especially as there are enough of us to ensure that we mingle with all the delegates during the the coffee breaks, meals, etc The best minds from all over the world will be present, and of course, Laureate Eric Kandel, who spent some time talking with me at Salk about what we have found. |

Good Luck in your endeavours! It will be one step to change the minds of those important researchers, then the next step can be to get word out to the MDs. I've decided there are 6 phases of development of the MD's MP-Mindfulness. They go like this: Phase 1 - Ridicule: "That's a load of hogwash, and don't tell me how to practice medicine! Phase 2 - Doubt: "OK, since you insist, I'll order the blood tests but I doubt they will show us anything I don't already know" Phase 3 - Incredulity: "Well, I don't really know what to make of it all... did you say Dr Marshall has published this stuff somewhere? Is it in a "real" medical journal or just some silly website... I'd like to see where it's been published... oh, you have a copy there for me? Um... thanks, I'll look at it." Phase 4 - Amazement: "hmmm... well that's amazing! Your test results came back just as the MP documents predicted." Phase 5 - Hesitation & Self-preservation: "Wow, this is scary stuff. It seems to be working but what if I get struck off for using it?" Phase 6 - Leap of Faith-in-Science: "Well, I've read the science and there doesn't really seem to be anything wrong with it. I'm getting results witih my patient(s)... This must be valuable new science after all and furthermore, there's nothing illegal or immoral about it either. I'm not sure what was holding me back from it... I'm going to find out all I can about the MP so I can help more of my patients get well."  just me, being creative... Claudia |

Claudia, I think everything is accurate to the sixth step. It is hard to say what will happen there, as we haven't gotten there yet. Let's hope that the two big conferences this year get us past step 5, so that we can start dealing with the (different) problems posed by step 6 |

Trevor, I cleaned my internet explorer cache and when opening the pdf again from this page, I got the same problem. After opening the pdf for the second time from this page, it worked fine. After downloading it by right clicking, it worked fine too when opened.. something to do with the cache I think. If people have this problem, they can simply download it by right clicking. There are a number of video 'transcripts' being prepared. The first two are now ready. Note that you can download the video file from a link on that page. For those of you who can't view the HDvideo, I will be creating a tiny YouTube version later today. I expect Paul will create a Vimeo version of his overview as well, with slightly better quality than YouTube offers. There are two videos still to come. Paul has put together the 'out-takes' left over after the first video was trimmed down to YouTube's 10 minute maximum length. I am also editing a DVD HD quality version of poster-summaries given by Meg, Amy and myself immediately after the final poster session was completed. Watch out for those... Additionally, I will start a new thread over the weekend to discuss the breaking news that Prions are apparently not infectious after all - at least not unless there is Th1 (chronic) inflammation present.
