Benicar post

Benicar 40mg Q6h / Mino 25mg Q48h (First dose of Mino May 11)

Non MP Medication: listed in signature line, Zyflo discontinued

Light Exposure: Minimal, always well covered, wear NOIR's

Symptoms:

  • Lightheaded, Dizziness (4)
  • Irritability (5-6)
  • Mental confusion/ Brain fog (7)
  • Muscle Cramps (4)
  • Headache (8)
Question:

I was given a prescription today for Lycra 50 mg for a headache. They suspect I have an inflamed nerve. I have not taken any. Is this acceptable with MP?

Thanks for letting us know you have started minocycline. See What should I know about Minocycline?

Please review the information threads pinned to the top of this forum so you will be able to independently locate answers to frequently asked questions. Be sure to read other progress reports to find folks with similar problems and learn how they are managing the protocol.

Rhinocort is contraindicated because it is a steroid.

We have reservations about Lyrica. See Pain medications

List routine measures to avoid light exposure (NoIRs, low lux home, homebound, limited outings covered up, lite exp. r/t work, etc) in your signature line only.

Report the amount of natural light exposure for the week. (e.g. 1 hr daily commute to work or 2 hr trip to doctor on Monday only or 2 hrs at a picnic on Friday or housebound all week in low lux home)

During Phase One you will learn to identify your immune response symptoms and manage all aspects of the MP....avoiding natural light and vitamin D, getting adequate rest, pacing activities, eating well, using palliative meds appropriately and managing the immune response by adjusting Benicar and minocycline.

It may take a week or two to feel the effects of each new minocycline dose level. It is best to err on the side of caution and stay at each dose level for 3-4 doses to make sure symptoms are tolerable. Don't ramp up until you are able to tolerate a symptom increase unless experience tells you that an increase would dampen intolerable symptoms. See When to increase antibiotics

An increase in any symptom that correlates with MP therapy is probably due to immunopathology. These symptoms can be controlled by adjusting MP medications and using palliative meds as needed.

Let us know how it goes.........:)

Thanks, Meg

This is Andy, I post in the Phase II / Phase III forum

BigT is my son

Clarification:

The headache predated MP. He has had a chronic severe headache over his left eye for about 4 months. Thus far MP has not made it any better or any worse.

So at this point it is impossible to say if it is an IPR.

An increase in Benicar to every four hours might provide a palliative anti-inflammatory effect to reduce your headache. Try this for 24 hours (set an alarm). You can also add 20mg taken subligually with each oral dose.

If you are concerned about Lyrica, please ask Doc for a different pain medication. Take care. :)

Benicar 40mg Q6h / Mino 25mg Q48h

Non-MP Medication: listed in signature line

Light Exposure: Approx 3-4 hours per week in car, well covered, wear NOIR's

Symptoms:
  • Lightheaded / dizzy - 2
  • Irritability - 1
  • Mental confusion / brain fog - 3
  • Muscle Cramps - 3
  • Headache - 6
Comments: Doing well, I skipped 2 doses of Mino this week in order to finish school with less brain fog. Plan on resuming 25 mg Mino dosage tomorrow after school. I might have to skip a dose next week in order to take final exams.

Thanks for reporting. If you are taking Zyrtec and/or Mucinex as needed, please report the number of times you've needed them during the past week.

It's fine to adjust Benicar and mino to reduce immunopathology when events demand optimum function.

If increasing Benicar does not reduce  symptoms enough, you may adjust mino. Try only one of these options at a time. Assess effect before trying another option:
-reduce the dose first
(lowest dose is 25mg)
-extend the schedule to every third or fourth day
-take an extra dose of 25mg (or 50mg if used to a higher dose)
-discontinue until symptoms settle
-ramp up by 25mg See When to increase antibiotics
-take low dose, high frequency mino (25mg every 6 hours or 50mg every 12 hours or a daily dose of 25-50mg)
When uncertain what to do when trying to reduce symptoms, it is best to first try reducing the mino dose and/or delaying the next dose before trying an extra dose or frequent mino dosing.

Hang in there......:)

Benicar 40mg Q6h / Mino 50mg Q48h

Non-MP Medication: Zyrtec 10mg Q24h; Mucinex 1200 mg Q12h

Light Exposure: 8hrs /wk, well covered, wear NOIRs

Symptoms:
  • Photo-sensitivity (8) fairly extreme
  • Irritability (6)
  • Lightheaded/Dizziness (3)
  • Mental Confusion / Brain fog (4)
  • Headache (7)
Comments:
  • Pretty much everything else is tied to Photo-sensitivity
  • I was able to finish school and take my final exams while taking 25mg of Mino
  • I am on my second dose of 50 mg Mino
  • Prior to MP I did not sleep well, I began sleeping very well as soon as I started taking Benicar
  • The last few months I have had uncontrollable and extreme acne on my face. I have gone to a Dermatologist, taken prescription medication, both oral and topical, none of it worked. When I began taking Benicar my acne began disappearing. Benicar by itself almost cured it. Now it flares up with IPR's

BigT, you are doing a good job recognizing immunopathology and that's half the battle to keep symptoms tolerable.

Increasing Benicar in anticipation of sun exposure may help. "I used to make sure that I was never more than 4 hours from my last Benicar whenever I had to go outdoors. Then, after the exposure, I needed to keep the 4 hour going for 12 hours after the final exposure. Beyond that I could slip back to normal dosing." ..Trevor.. See What precautions should I take when I must go out?

Keep up the good work............:)

Comments:

Spent all of last week on vacation at Disney World. We had already made reservations before we knew I was going to begin MP. So we decided to go and give it a try. It was hard at times, but we would go out in the morning then eat lunch at the motel and spend part of the afternoon in the room. Then go back out in the evening. Even though it was hard I managed OK and had a lot of fun. I am glad to resume cave dwelling this week.

BigT,

In phase one, it's a good idea to experiment with minocycline and Benicar to see how they work for you. Extend the mino dosing schedule to every 72 hours to see if symptoms are dampened or if more immunopathology is provoked.

And conversely, when symptoms peak (not necessarily intolerable), reduce the mino dose to see if that dampens symptoms. You could also try taking lower dose minocycline every six or 12 hours (25mg every 6 hours or 50mg every 12 hours or a daily dose of 25-50mg) to see if this dosing has an anti-flammatory effect for you.

When a symptom approaches intolerable try an extra Benicar, both oral and sublingual. If that is not effective, increase to every four hours around the clock (set an alarm) to see if that measure is effective to quell the symptom.

The resulting information can be added to your personal tool kit. You will gain experience adjusting MP meds to maintain tolerable immune system reactions. This skill will carry you smoothly through the protocol; when you have learned to manage on a day-to-day basis, you will be equipped to handle a crisis if it occurs.

Let us know how the experimenting goes........... :)

Comments:

All in all I might be a little better. My parent's say my personality is returning.

I saw my MP doctor last week. He gave me an ABX prescription to proceed to modified Ph-2 when my IPR's allow it. We thought that was a good idea to try and target the nerve that they think is causing my headache. Also to see if we can lower my bacteria load some more before I begin the longer cycles.

Thank you T
Please see How do I know if I'm ready for phase two? for information on how to request the questionnaire. Suggest you send for the Q asap so you can read the information, and post in the Phase 2/3 forum to discuss your medications there before you start.

Ask your doctor about the tests you need to monitor your progress on the MP.
Thanks, all best, Barb ...

We went to Branson, MO for Thanksgiving. I had a lot of fun. We met my Grandparents there. I think back to last Thanksgiving, I was so sick I didn't enjoy it at all. It was really different this year

Thanks, MP

Very busy at school. I have probably already attended school more days this year than I did the entire year last year.
