During the tele-conference I suggested that for members who were interested in how scientists think, and what drives the spirit of scientific discovery, the BBC TV series from the 1970's: "The Ascent of Man" is a 'must-see'.

There is a set of five DVDs available from Amazon at URL

http://www.amazon.com/Ascent-Man-5-set/dp/B000NDI3SK/ref=sr_1_1

and it also seems to be available through Netflix at URL:

http://www.netflix.com/Movie/The-Ascent-of-Man/70072905

You don't need the book, it is just a summary of each of the 13 hours of TV episodes, and of little use once you have watched the TV series.

Bronowski prepared the series while he was resident fellow at the Salk Institute, and was able to draw upon the scientists there, and the contacts and ideas they had accumulated from all around the globe.

Sadly, he died just after the last show in the series was filmed. He never knew how important or influential his work would become.

I found it at my local library so maybe many of you can find it too.  You might also be able to find it at http://www.worldcat.org/ Thanks Dr. Marshall for taking the time to talk to us today and answer some questions!

I forgot to press my own "RECORD" button until about 15 minutes before the end. But two members have recordings, so we will get a full copy online so you can view it. Please give us a day or two to transfer the files :)

Thanks... I intended to be there, and you'd think I ought to have caught onto myself and put it on the calendar... but no. :P

Looking forward to whatever gets online about it.

Me too!! I can't believe how unable I am to remember things like this. One of these days I will join in the conversation.
Right now I am eagerly awaiting notes or tapes of what transpired.

Trevor,

I just watched this piece of the conference and immediately after that ran into the following paper. (You mentioned Familial Aggregation and the immune system of children.)

Human Fetal Immune System Arises from Entirely Different Source Than Adult Immune System
http://tinyurl.com/37ck7es

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2010/12/101216165519.htm

It seems important/interesting.

Best, Frans

Well, indirectly through the conference I found the explanation I was looking for  about the emergence of a morbidity that was seemingly not present before the MP.....and that was that the MP did not cause it,but it was a subclinical morbidity that became clinical during treatment. This explains why tinnitus emerged for me after two years on the treatment where as I had no previous hint that it was even there.

Also, looking at the graph that showed the high incident of mood/motivation  disorder among the study reminded me of a conversation I had with  John Paul Jones.

We have noticed  shifts in not only our motivation level, but the directions in which we are motivated. We hypothesized that this may be a very much milder symptom of more severe mood disorders where profound changes in personality are present.

When I was in psychosis and diagnosed schizoaffective, I took on several personalities in my mind...'becoming' other people or even believing that I was another person or that they were an aspect of me.This lead me into several erratic directions. While there may be a function of role modeling in the brain that is normal....if there is it may be exploited by the disease. Combine that with a over-stimulated amygdala and you begin to see how profound the mental dysfunction can be.

I am amazed at the opprotunity afforded to me to recover and actually remember those conditions while gaining so much new insight into the disease. I never thought that I ....the crazy guy locked up in the mental ward, would see what my doctors never saw and don't see even today. The process of healing on the MP gives even more insight as I go on...just like the video today with Janet seemed to give me a better scope of what I have actually survived.

Last, the whole process of living with this mild variation in motivation and direction now doesn't leave me discouraged much like it used to. I am learning to observe it and be much more patient with myself...as I now believe it to be part of the process of healing just as with any other symptom.

Sean,
Yes, Janet gave a wonderful presentation this evening, didn't she. Glad to know it was a help.

It really is quite amazing how one's mind becomes lucid again, incrementally, as one heals. Memories come flooding back, so that you can (occasionally) kick yourself for the silly things you used to do, but still understand that everything was an essential part of getting from there to here.

The goal at this point is to focus upon that incrementally-clearer picture of where we are going -- the light at the end of the tunnel. And it certainly is fascinating to 'compare notes' about the journey, as well as the goal. The journeys of others help us define that goal so much more clearly :)

Dr. Marshall, and Janet,

Wonderful presentation. I only wish I did not have to work Saturdays. I like that a few aspects of the Mp are covered in good detail. Glad to watch the video, and see the MP growing into a real treatment, with real results. I will be making my donation today. Thanks again Dr M for saving my life, as well as many others. With great respect. Terry :) :)

I wouldn't have missed it for anything.  Thank you!

Without high speed internet, the library had to do, but they cut off computer access in 1 hour increments.:(  I was so glad to find the conference recorded so I could see the rest.:)  I hope the recordings will be available for a while.

Janet Raty's presentation was perfect timing, justifying my fairly strong mood and cognitive IP.

How reassuring this conference was that things are unfolding exactly as they should, and according to the MP plan.  Also, that Clindy as the second antibiotic was indeed the best way, for me to proceed.

I am starting to see the light of emotional healing coming on, along with physical, etc...  I definitely have a much clearer picture.   Thank you, Taryn

The BBC is reporting that Jacob Bronowski is being honored in the city of Hull, with a plaque erected where he lived there during 1934.
