Well, its June, so time for Shanghai again. The CPhI conference. Where the huge size of the pharmaceutical manufacturing industry in China becomes glaringly obvious...

I have some hard work to do Tuesday and Wednesday, but today I have one job: stay awake :) Today is my jet-lag adjusting day...

So I took the subway down into the center of Shanghai, then walked away from the tourist trap which is the central paved walkway (Nanjing Road), walking north to Beijing Road. I had read there was another electronic parts super-market there, SEG, and found it sure enough. Not as extensive as Shenzhen, but still a 7 story SEC building with floors of chaotic component stores like this:

The streets around the mart were old and 'traditional' without the cleanliness and wide open spaces of a modern Chinese city. Just minutes from the tourist trap you can walk to the old heart of the city - really nice, and worth a visit if you get to this neck of the woods.

The subway was really crowded. uncomfortably so. When I got back to the stop servicing my hotel I found an "E-Mart" nearby, the biggest Chinese supermarket I have seen to date. Bought myself a lot more chocolate - I have a hard week ahead :) :) :) And other stuff too, like milk for my tea (no added vit D here).

Tucked away in one corner were some electric motor bikes and cycles.

The signs read 2499 Yuan for an electric scooter, 1899 for an electric cycle. Divide that by 6.3 to get US dollars ...

Anyway, time to think about sleep again now...

Thanks Dr Marshall for the travelogue!  I really enjoy the pictures and seeing interesting scenes in China ... a country that we have not visited ... YET!

Good luck overcoming the jet-lag so you can get all that work done at the pharma conference!

:D

Well, the first day is over. They even had a band to welcome us to the fray:

Sorry I didn't catch them playing. I caught them during a break...

In August 2009 I listened to a keynote at the Biotech forum. The Chinese Health Ministry expounded their ten-year plan -- to supply half the world's pharmaceuticals within 10 years. I reckon they must just about be doing that now. Compared to last year, this years expo has grown from 7 halls to 10. These are HUGE halls, taking each a couple of  hours just to walk around looking at the booths. My legs haven't been so tired for quite a while...

You can find a manufacturer here for anything you want. for example:

You can buy Demeclocycline by the 50Kg drum, and only by the 50Kg drum, mino, clindy, whatever... But only in quantities. These guys ship tons of product each year... Sigh...

Anyway, my first meeting went well, let's see what happens tomorrow.

Let's see .. 100Kilo .. that would be enough for 1826 patients for a whole year at 4 hourly dosing (one patient-year is about 54 grams). 100killo would make my suitcase rather heavy, yet most of these manufacturers are looking for orders of tons at a time... :X :) :)

OK, it's Wednesday morning, time to get our minds in gear again:

and I need to buy about 1/100 of a ton of Pure Olmesartan. Got it, my mind is in gear now :) :)

The reason we are in China, however, can be seen in this photo of a company who makes glassware for small scale production. The glassware in this photo, and the computer controller (between the two onlookers),  is going to be shipped to Moscow after the show ends.

So China and Russia are interested in small scale production of high-tech chemicals -- USA? not so much...

Anyway, everything went smoothly, now I have to condense this morning's  verbal agreements into writing, and send the changes to the FDA...
