A new article in BMJ GUT identifies the anti-diabetic activity of Metformin as being against the bacteria in the gut. Here is the abstract:

http://gut.bmj.com/content/63/5/706.extract

This adds to the studies showing that Diabetes has apparently been cured by some types of anti-obesity surgery, some of which identified that this was due to changes in the gut pathology, and not the food-impulse.

Taken with the studies which showed that the brain controls glycemia via the vagus nerve, apparently by regulating Leptin, as the brain can change glycemia independent of insulin level, it looks like a new era in Diabetes care lies ahead of us...

I wonder if my going to a very low carb diet many years ago when I had what seemed to me to be the symptoms of diabetes or pre-diabetes, constant thirst and hunger, was actually just changing the gut microbiome.  It worked very well and I've pretty much maintained a low carb diet since.  Cynthia

I would not be surprised if this is the main way SCD calms symptoms.
