This weekend the Australian Financial Review carries an article titled  "Why are we taking so much Vitamin D?"

Unfortunately, the Financial Review is one of those 'influential' newspapers behind a tight, pay-for-content, firewall, so the article is only available to those subscribers in Australia, I am afraid. I guess it is also on the news-stands.

http://afr.com.au

A nice summary of our work is included, as well as overviews and citations from other researchers. For example:

"I doubt that the sort of Vitamin D you buy over the counter will do any harm, and personally I doubt it will do any good" -- Emeritus Prof of Medicine, Jack Martin, University of Melbourne.

Prof Gary Leong, Brisbane's Mater's Childrens' Hospital says "Human Biology has a way of surprising us, as it did with hormone replacement raising the risk of breast cancer in women."

All in all an excellent article by journalist Jill Margo. The first drop of what (we can hope) will be a flood of journalistic common sense...

That's great!  :):):)

(I seem to hear something how everybody is Vit D deficient in the media here at least once/week.... sigh).

I have a copy which was sent to me by the author. It is very good indeed, balanced and fair. But I cannot release that onto the web, it is copyright.  Hopefully something will be released for public consumption as the days roll by... surely?

You can sign up for a free 14 day trial and access the article. You have to give your credit card number but they don't charge you if you cancel within the 14 days.

Unless they have changed their policy since I did this.. I was able to use my US credit card to get the 14 day trial subscription ... then cancel to avoid being charged.  I did this in late November when the article came out.  You may want to try a different credit card Dr Marshall.

Well, I read the AFR article and was upset about the following, Dr Marshall:

"Before I left for a recent conference in Scotland, I got threats telling me it was best if I not go. They were not from any organisaton, just from individuals, probably the same ones that keep defacing my Wikipedia bio whenever it gets updated."

It shouldn't surprise me that certain people (Vitamin D proponents, I presume?) would make those threats but it demonstrates what you're up against. Bravo for pushing through and attending the conference!
