A micro-NMR machine has just been demonstrated:

http://stm.sciencemag.org/content/3/71/71ra16.abstract

This is particularly interesting for me, as in 1978, when I started my PhD research, I identified NMR as having the potential for miniaturization and use as a tiny diagnostic tool, rather than the huge room-filling structures which came to be called "MRI" because the public didn't like the "nuclear" in "Nuclear Magnetic Resonance." :)

I eventually transitioned my PhD research to the study of insulin-glucose homeostasis in Diabetes, and my thesis was based on that.

But you will find lots of dreamy papers written by me at that time suggesting we really ought to spend some money on miniature NMR research...

Sigh...

and congratulations to the research team who finally made it work :) :)
