I arrived a day early, and so was awake when dawn came up this morning. You can see the port of Dalian in the middle distance, and just beyond that, all the ships at anchor waiting to enter port (click on the image below to see the full-size version with all the detail)

Hey Dr. M!

I'm so jealous... If you're around that super china electronics market again, can you pick me up some U.FL pigtails for WIFI antannae?

:D

I'm having a devil of a time here... no one knows WTH I'm talking about when I want a coaxial antenna lead for wifi...

I'm having fun and want to setup some wifi connections down the street to my friend's house, for a VPN...

:dude:

Have fun up there, I'm a bit jealous.... But I'm happy you are able to work with some open minded people.

I'm just noting that there are light on across the waters and on the ship but almost none in the buildings and streets.  If you were in the US, everything would be lit up.  Is it mandated in China, not to use resources so freely, or are they just that good?  It is nice to see.

Thanks for the great shot, :D  Taryn

Taryn,
There is a "green" consciousness in China, but the new buildings are lit up  by kaleidoscopic LED lamp arrays (they don't use much energy). There were none of those buildings in the docklands area, I do have a video I will post when I get home, to illustrate the lighting in a more recently built area of the city.

Yesterday was the last day of NeuroTalk, so I traveled from Dalian to Beijing, where I am going to visit a contact at the medical university.

On the airport express train, I couldn't help but notice that yanjing beer is not only fresh and cool, but the "official partner of the China's Lunar Exploration program." I should probably try some, while humming "fly me to the moon..."

Let's see... Amy told me once that this sign means a "Shabu Shabu" restuarant, but I could never manage to understand the Chinese "Xi.." construct.. :)

And somewhere behind these gates lies the "Temple of Heaven."  Maybe I will get time to visit on Saturday. It is refreshing to see the motorcycles and bicycles again, they were banned in Dalian :(

Let's see -- these shingles say "National Research Center for Analysis of Drugs and Metabolites," check, "National Engineering Research Center for Development of New Drugs," check, "New Drugs Safety Evaluation Center of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and Peking Union Medical College," check, -- looks like I have the right place... I guess it pays to advertise... :)

Yesterday I visited Prof Wang at Capital Medical University in Beijing. We had met at the DNA-day conference, where he gave a talk explaining that 'sub-optimal health' exists between health and disease (which a lot of people haven't figured out yet). CMU is an old University, not the largest in Beijing, but one of the prettiest. Here is a photo of the main building from the 500 yard long tree-lined central area between the buildings. What a great place to walk though when going from lecture to lecture...

It was prof Wang's birthday, and so 15 staff and students, myself, and a visiting prof from University of Melbourne,  went to a birthday dinner banquet. Here is a piccy of the head of the table, with Beijing in the background

Modern China has an interesting custom of not drinking alcoholic beverages unless a toast is being offered. Consequently groups move around the table, semi-continuously 'toasting' (and drinking).

Well, that's it for this trip, I think. I leave later today for the airport, and the long flight home.

I was standing outside the hotel, watching the world walk by (and doodling away the time before my flight can check-in) when I noticed people walking by, carrying fresh vegetables. Since that usually means a market is nearby, I followed the 'bread crumbs'

down this little alley-way (see the lovely new buildings in the background), and into a different world from the one Beijing paints in the tourist brochures. this is what a  Beijing farmers-market looks like.

and out to the front of the building, for completeness

And if one doesn't want to haggle and jostle, one can always buy from the vendor on the street corner

Saturday is the day to replenish the pantry, apparently :) :)
