"Exploiting the fact that cancer cells tend to suppress the immune reaction to avoid being destroyed"
Another cause and effect misconception IMO. I would prefer to think that the bacteria causing the Interactome dysfunction leading to metastatic proliferation also are pretty effective at knocking out the VDR.
For this is what the Salk Institute research group explained at the recent "Epigenetics and cancer" symposium - activating the VDR suppresses metastasis in mice. They are still trying to figure out how to find out what it does in man
Interesting that Salk is also studying pancreatic cancer. It is one of the most aggressive manifestations of cancer, I guess...
Also fascinating that mice succumb to cancer in this way. I wonder when we are going to start studying the mouse microbiome?
I saw on the news about a year ago Univ of PA. did some kind of study with end stage blood cancer patients. They withdrew blood from the patients and extracted their stem cells. They then injected the stem cells with some type of benign HIV virus, then re injected the HIV infected stem cells into the patients. About 2 weeks later, the patients became extremely ill with flu like symptoms. Then the cancer was either gone or in remission. It looked promising. They were going to try it with other poor outcome CA's as well -
Martha, people with many cancers are treated as terminal, with no hope. And any harebrained scheme seems to be an acceptable treatment. I hope we can put that attitude behind us rather quickly...
Next week I talk (in Russia) about "The Science of Safety" -- how an understanding of disease processes is key to any effective treatment strategy. We will see if the rest of the world is at that point yet. I think they are, even though America is not...
