Well, we flew from Beijing to Haikou yesterday, preparing for my Molmed keynote tomorrow. Captain kept warning us about 'unexpected turbulence' but in the end the landing was better than many I have experienced. Pretty smooth, even though we landed at 11/003Z, and the typhoon had just crossed into Vietnam a few hundred miles away. Everything is pretty normal here, though...

Hi Dr M,

I am glad you missed the typhoon! I can't imagine how bad it was.

Truly a close shave.  Those people in Tacloban and in other hard hit areas of the Phillipines are suffering mightily.  Yet Palau got a nearly direct hit, and came out of it very well.  They were ready . . .

I hope the conference is a successful one for you, Dr. M.

Haikou looks like haiku:

Please rain, stop coming
The wind tore our homes apart
Water, food, rebuilding now

This reminds me of your visit to Amsterdam in 2010. You went to great lengths back then to get there in time, avoiding ashes from volcano eruptions by constantly changing flights. And now again this typhoon. It's almost metaphorical, these great powers all over the world that hinder you getting the word out. :P
